Professor Michel Michaelides is a leading academic and clinician at University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology, holding a professorship in Ophthalmology within the Department of Genetics. He serves as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital across Medical Retina, Inherited Eye Disease, and Paediatric Ophthalmology departments.
His research focuses on inherited retinal degenerative diseases, diabetic macular edema, and advanced retinal imaging techniques. He has established the UK's only Adaptive Optics Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) outside the USA, enabling groundbreaking gene therapy trials. His work spans clinical characterization, genotype-phenotype correlations, and structure-function associations in retinal disorders.
Professor Michaelides leads 9 ethically approved studies (7 NIHR portfolio) and serves as principal investigator in 4 clinical trials, including the world's first ocular stem cell therapy trial. His publication record includes over 150 peer-reviewed papers and 18 book chapters, with h-indices of 25 (Scopus), 24 (Web of Science), and 30 (Google Scholar).
