Professor Mariya Moosajee is a clinician-scientist and Chair in Molecular Ophthalmology at UCL's Institute of Ophthalmology. Her work focuses on genetic eye diseases, including developing gene therapies and studying molecular mechanisms behind congenital eye anomalies. She leads research on CRISPR-Cas9, non-viral gene vectors, and regenerative medicine approaches. Her recent studies address challenges in gene therapy vector capacity and immune responses. She is also Academic Lead for Early Career Researchers at UCL, promoting skill development and mentorship.
Research Interests: Genetic eye diseases, personalized medicine, retinal degeneration, and CBS in visually impaired patients. Her group explores therapies such as AAV vectors, CRISPR editing, and small molecule drugs.
Education: BSc with research on EFEMP1 gene expression in fetal ocular tissue, followed by medical training and a Wellcome Trust Fellowship.
Grants & Awards: Wellcome Trust (2016), NIHR Rare Disease Award, leadership roles in Women in Vision UK and UK Eye Genetics Group. She authored over 50 papers on topics like CRB1 retinopathy and choroideremia.
