Marcus Fruttiger is a Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London. His research focuses on retinal biology and its pathologies, particularly diabetic retinopathy, macular telangiectasia, and age-related macular degeneration.
- PhD in Neurobiology, ETH Zurich (1994)
- Diploma in Biochemistry, ETH Zurich (1990)
His work combines experimental models with human postmortem studies and clinical collaborations at Moorfields Eye Hospital to bridge model systems with clinical translation. Recent research trends include metabolomic profiling of retinal disorders, genetic locus identification for retinal morphology, and microvascular-neurodegeneration interactions in diabetes.
Notable scientific contributions include studies on VEGFR1 signaling in angiogenesis, Wnt pathway roles in hematopoiesis, and lipid dysregulation as a risk factor for macular degeneration. Awards include Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow and ViP Award Fellow.
As an educator, he founded UCL's Bioscience Entrepreneurship MSc and serves as Deputy Director of Education at the Institute of Ophthalmology, pioneering blended and flipped learning approaches.
