Dr James Walmsley is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences at Bangor University, where he plays a central role in teaching and mentoring forestry students, particularly through distance learning postgraduate programs. He is deeply committed to enhancing student learning experiences and has been recognized with a Bangor University Teaching Fellowship in 2014 and multiple nominations for Student Led Teaching Awards.
His academic background includes a PhD in Forestry from Bangor University (2009), an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment from Aberystwyth University, and a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of Birmingham. He also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education.
Dr Walmsley's research spans a broad spectrum of forestry topics, including forest bioenergy, silviculture, stump harvesting, woodland establishment, carbon sequestration, and sustainable forest management. His work often integrates policy analysis, environmental sustainability, and international collaboration, particularly with institutions in Ghana. He has led and supervised student research on topics such as whole-tree harvesting, domestic firewood use, and re-wilding.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in applied forestry, educational outreach, and international development, with a focus on sustainable tropical forestry, continuous cover management, and the role of higher education in addressing global forestry challenges.
