James Wages is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), where he has been affiliated since August 2021. He teaches courses including Research Methods (PSYC 2331), Psychology Apprenticeship (PSYC 4301/2), and Psychology in Context (PSYC 4311). His research focuses on social cognition, stereotyping, and decision-making, particularly how risk-taking perceptions and social biases (racial/gender) influence social judgments and systemic inequities.
Dr. Wages holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Social Psychology from Northwestern University, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He was the first in his family to earn a college degree. His work often explores intersections of racial dynamics in education, medical settings, and societal structures.
Key research initiatives include the Race and Risk Project, which examines racialized stereotypes in risk perception, and interventions to address psychosocial health disparities among medical students. His studies have highlighted systemic barriers faced by Black medical students and the role of self-affirmation techniques in mitigating racial bias impacts.
Outside academia, Dr. Wages enjoys hiking, photography, and weightlifting, and remains an avid supporter of the Arkansas Razorbacks.
