Dr. James Strong is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at the University of Manitoba's Max Rady College of Medicine. He holds cross-appointments in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease. As a medical officer in the Public Health Agency of Canada's Special Pathogens department, he leads the diagnostics and therapeutics section overseeing reference services for high-consequence viral pathogens like filoviruses, bunyaviruses, and flaviviruses. His research focuses on filovirus pathophysiology, outbreak management, and developing medical countermeasures through animal models and tissue cultures.
Education includes an MD/PhD from the University of Calgary (1997/1996), with earlier degrees in Zoology (1988) and Cellular Biology (1990). Notable roles include serving with Médecins Sans Frontières during African Ebola/Marburg outbreaks and advising WHO/GOARN. He co-founded a CL4 ICU suite for high-containment pathogen studies, integrating healthcare worker training with lab expertise.
Research interests span diagnostics, viral ecology, and outbreak preparedness. Awards include the 2020 Faculty Educator of the Year and Order of Manitoba Buffalo Hunt (2016). He actively mentors graduate students in Master's and PhD programs.
