James Sanders is a Lecturer in Digital Health Research at Loughborough University, affiliated with the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM) and the CLIMB Centre for Lifestyle Medicine & Behaviour. He completed his BSc (Human Biology), MSc (Physical Activity and Public Health), and PhD (Digital Health) at Loughborough. His research focuses on leveraging machine learning and wearable technology to design digital health interventions, particularly for promoting physical activity and addressing sedentary behavior. He has led the Snacktivity project, an NIHR-funded initiative to develop small, achievable physical activity interventions in clinical and community settings.

Dr. Sanders’ research interests span digital health technologies, physical activity promotion, accelerometer validation, and translational research in healthcare. His work emphasizes practical interventions like the Snacktivity framework, which uses brief physical activity ‘snacks’ to improve cardiovascular health and reduce sedentary time. He collaborates with commercial partners and health professionals to integrate these interventions into routine clinical practice.
His publications analyze the effectiveness of digital tools for tracking activity patterns, predicting health metrics like VO2 max, and improving outcomes for populations such as patients with diabetes and pregnant women. He has conducted systematic reviews on wearable technology accuracy and health intervention design. Current efforts focus on aligning research-grade accelerometers with consumer wearables for scalable self-monitoring.
Dr. Sanders has secured funding from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) for the Snacktivity project and collaborates internationally on studies bridging behavioral science and technology. His work aims to make physical activity interventions accessible, sustainable, and integrated into everyday life.
