James Kinchen is a Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside since 1989. He leads three university choirs: University Chorale, Voices of Parkside, and Master Singers. His expertise includes choral conducting, African American music, and music teacher preparation. He holds an EDD from the University of North Carolina Greensboro, with prior studies at Jacksonville University and Southern Illinois University.
Research interests focus on choral performance, interpretation of spirituals, and music education methodologies. He has conducted internationally in venues like Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, and has led choirs in Germany, Italy, Cuba, India, China, and beyond. Active in professional organizations, he serves on the Executive Board of the Wisconsin Music Educators Association and has been President of the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association and North Central Division of the American Choral Directors Association.
Recipient of the Morris D. Hayes Award for outstanding Wisconsin choral direction, he also holds teaching excellence and diversity awards. Engaged in campus governance, he participates in the University Committee and Faculty Senate. Courses taught include conducting, choral methods, music appreciation, and African American music studies.
