James Kastely is Chair and Professor of English at the University of Houston, specializing in the history and theory of rhetoric. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. from the University of Michigan. His research explores the intersection of rhetorical theory with philosophical and ethical questions, particularly in ancient and modern contexts.
Notable works include The Rhetoric of Plato’s Republic (2015), Rethinking the Rhetorical Tradition (1997), and his forthcoming Loving the World Appropriately (2022). His scholarship spans Plato’s dialogues, Burkean criticism, and the ethics of persuasion.
