Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinaiمعرفی
James J Bieker is a Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai within the Department of Cell, Developmental & Regenerative Biology. His research focuses on transcriptional regulation in erythroid cells, particularly the role of the erythroid Krüppel-like factor (EKLF/KLF1) in globin gene switching and red blood cell development.
His work has major implications for understanding and potentially treating hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell anemia and β-thalassemia. He has identified EKLF as the founding member of the KLF family of transcription factors and continues to investigate its biochemical properties, protein interactions, and regulatory mechanisms during embryonic development.
- Research Highlights: EKLF's role in chromatin structure, its dual function in transcriptional activation/repression, and BMP4/Smad pathway regulation
- Key Collaborations: Differentiating embryonic stem cell studies and structural-functional analyses
Scientific Awards:
- 2018 Guest Speaker, Scientific Program on Red Cell Biology (American Society of Hematology)
- 2013 Faculty Council Award for Academic Excellence
- 2012 FASEB Conference Keynote Speaker
- 2008 Tohoku Medical Society Testimonial
- 1994 Leukemia Society of America Scholar
- 1974 Leopold Marcus Award for Chemistry Research
Professor Bieker's publications show a consistent focus on erythroid gene regulation and transcription factor dynamics, with recent studies exploring coactivator/corepressor interactions and chromatin remodeling pathways.
