Merlin Nithya Gnanapragasam

Dr. Merlin Nithya Gnanapragasam serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences within the College of Arts and Sciences at Cleveland State University. She is a core faculty member of the Center for Gene Regulation in Health and Disease (GRHD), where her laboratory investigates fundamental processes governing tissue proliferation and differentiation, with a specific focus on erythroid cell development.

Her primary research interests center on understanding how specialized transcriptional regulation in erythroid cells accommodates rapid terminal cell divisions, and the molecular pathogenesis of Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia (CDA), particularly CDA IV which results from mutations in the EKLF/KLF1 transcription factor. She also investigates hemoglobin switching mechanisms with therapeutic implications for beta thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

Dr. Gnanapragasam's publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to hematology research, with recent work focusing on PUM1-mediated regulation of fetal hemoglobin, genomic DNA sequences modulating KLF1 expression, and the role of EKLF/KLF1 in macrophage subsets during erythropoiesis. Her research employs erythroid cells as a model system to understand fundamental cell cycle regulation during terminal differentiation.

Her laboratory is currently supported by external funding from NIDDK/NIH (R01, K01 awards) and the Cooley's Anemia Foundation. She actively mentors PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in her research program.
