James Huynh, PhD, MA, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. A transdisciplinary public health researcher, he integrates queer and feminist theories with health equity frameworks to examine how LGBTQ communities of color sustain well-being under systems of racial capitalism, patriarchy, and heterosexism.
- PhD in Community Health Sciences with a Gender Studies concentration (UCLA, 2024)
- MA in Asian American Studies (UCLA, 2019)
- MPH in Community Health Sciences (UCLA, 2019)
- BA in Human Biology (Stanford University, 2015)
His research focuses on intersectional oppression and health outcomes, particularly through three areas: community-engaged work with LGBTQ Asian American movements, intersectional mental health effects, and queer/feminist theoretical approaches in mixed-methods health policy research. His current project Sustaining Kin explores Vietnamese American LGBTQ organizing in Orange County using social network analysis and ethnography.
Recent publications span topics like critical race praxis, refugee kinship, housing discrimination impacts, and pandemic equity. Methodologically, he bridges quantitative network analysis with qualitative ethnography to expose structural determinants of health.
- Health Policy Research Scholar (RWJF)
- Fulbright U.S. Fellow
Dr. Huynh collaborates with Viet Rainbow of Orange County as Research Committee Co-Chair, advancing community-driven policy changes. His work uniquely synthesizes anti-racist, queer, and feminist epistemologies to reshape public health paradigms.
