Hy V. Huynh (they/them) is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in Global Health & Public Policy at Duke University, holding core faculty appointments in the Duke Hart Leadership Program, Asian American & Diaspora Studies Program, Duke Sexual and Gender Minority Wellness Program, Center for Health Policy & Inequalities Research, and Duke Global Health Institute. With 16 years of international development experience across Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central America, and the U.S., Dr. Huynh specializes in community-centered mental health equity for marginalized youth.
Dr. Huynh's educational background includes:
- PhD in International Family & Community Studies
- Bachelor's degree in Cultural Anthropology
As an equity-centered community psychologist, their research integrates community- and systems-level influences to address mental health inequities for orphaned/separated children, immigrant/refugee youth, youth of color, and LGBTQ+ young adults in low-resource contexts. Key domains span HIV/AIDS, maternal/child health, trauma, and social determinants of health, with emphasis on culturally salient interventions through ethical visual storytelling and community engagement. Their work spans Brazil, Cambodia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, Qatar, Tanzania, the U.S., and Vietnam.
Dr. Huynh teaches Ethics for Global Health Research (GLHLTH 740) and advises through the Hart Fellows Program while facilitating mental health therapy groups and mindfulness trainings for QTBIPOC communities. They also operate a social impact website design studio creating equity-focused digital platforms for community organizations.
