Christa Craven is a Professor of Sociology and Anthropology and Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies at the College of Wooster, serving as Program Chair of Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. She holds a B.A. from New College, Florida (1997), an M.A. (2000) and Ph.D. (2003) from American University. Her research focuses on reproductive politics, LGBTQ+ family-making, and feminist ethnography, with a particular emphasis on queer reproductive loss and transnational activism. Craven has authored or co-authored multiple books, including Reproductive Losses: Challenges to LGBTQ Family-Making (2019), which won the 2021 Council on Anthropology & Reproduction Book Prize.
Her work explores intersections of gender, race, and class in reproductive health, including midwifery advocacy and the impact of neoliberal policies on reproductive rights. Courses taught include Introduction to Anthropology, Global Queer Studies, and Feminist Research Methods. Professional affiliations include the American Anthropological Association and the Council on Anthropology and Reproduction.
Recent scholarship highlights LGBTQ+ experiences of reproductive loss, heteronormative healthcare barriers, and strategies for community resilience. Craven’s interdisciplinary approach bridges activism and academia, addressing systemic inequities in family formation and healthcare access.
