James Goudkamp is a Professor of the Law of Obligations at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Keble College. His research focuses on tort law, with significant contributions to contributory negligence, defences in private law, and civil procedure. He holds adjunct roles at Harvard Law School and other institutions. Goudkamp earned his University Medal in law from the University of Wollongong (2003), followed by BCL, MPhil, and DPhil degrees from Oxford (2007–2010). His career includes roles as a Lecturer at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and a Research Fellow at Jesus College. He co-authored seminal texts such as Atiyah's Accidents, Compensation and the Law and Winfield & Jolowicz on Tort, and has published over 100 articles. His work emphasizes empirical studies on contributory negligence and legal reform.
