Dr James Edwards is an Associate Professor in Bioscience Education at the Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth. He holds multiple roles including Academic Lead for Microbiology, Enquiry-Based Learning (EBL) Lead for BMBS Infection and Immunity Theme Lead for MSc Physician Associate Studies, and Academic Tutor for BMBS years 1 & 2. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, recognized through student-nominated awards.
His teaching focuses on medical microbiology, antibiotics, antibiotic resistance, and molecular biology. He co-organizes the Microbiology Educators Network under the Microbiology Society and collaborates in the Division of Educational Scholarship with Dr Tracey Collett and Dr Helen Watson. Past roles include co-lead for the Year 2 'Doctor as Educator' module and Foundations of Clinical Medicine module lead for MSc Physician Associates (2018–2020).
James actively engages in educational research, supervising projects such as William Adams’ study on pre-clinical medical student time use (2021) and Zachary Knee’s evaluation of a remote near-peer mentoring scheme (2021). His work aligns with global health priorities, contributing to Sustainable Development Goals through medical education innovation and scientific rigor.
