James Bonnamy is a Research Fellow at Monash University's School of Nursing and Midwifery, working under the mentorship of Professor Gabrielle Brand. He holds a Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing (Honours), Master of Nursing, and a Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education from Monash University, and is currently a PhD Candidate. James has extensive clinical experience, including roles as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Support Nurse, Clinical Nurse Educator, and Nurse Unit Manager, with particular expertise in specialist medical/surgical nursing and care of burn victim-survivors.

James's research focuses on three primary areas: Co-Design and Participatory Action Research in health professions education, broader Health Professions Education, and Planetary Health. His work examines how healthcare educators can integrate planetary health education into curricula, ensuring health professions students are equipped to address environmental challenges. He has led multiple projects on consumer and community involvement in health professions education, including co-designing simulation to uncover and address cognitive bias in healthcare. James has also explored student-driven feedback processes and the experiences of nurses supervising students with unsafe practices.
His recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on collaborative, transformative, and inclusive research that delivers tangible benefits for healthcare consumers and professionals. His work spans participatory action research, planetary health education, and innovative teaching methods like escape rooms in nursing education.

As a supervisor, James has mentored Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) and Master of Advanced Nursing students through to completion, with research topics including burnout among emergency nurses and escape rooms as teaching strategies. He has contributed to teaching practical skills-based education to undergraduate nursing, midwifery, and paramedicine students, and has served as Chief Examiner and Unit Coordinator for NUR1112: Fundamental Skills and Knowledge for Nursing and Midwifery Practice 1. Beyond his academic role, James maintains clinical practice as a Patient Services Manager at Peninsula Health and as an Authorised Nurse Immuniser, and volunteers with Street Side Medics and GoodSAM.
