James Blasingame is the President's Professor and Director of English Education at Arizona State University's Department of English. His roles include executive director of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN) of the National Council of Teachers of English, and former editor of The ALAN Review. He has authored/co-authored numerous books on young adult literature, secondary writing instruction, and cowboy poetry. Blasingame created the Books for Adolescents pages in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy and annually curates the English Journal Honor List of YA literature with Professors Alleen and Don Nilsen.
His research focuses on Indigenous education, secondary writing pedagogy, and pre-service teacher preparation. Blasingame has conducted over 60 interviews with YA authors and poets, and presented cowboy poetry performances at major conferences like the National Council of Teachers of English. His work bridges literary analysis with practical classroom applications, emphasizing culturally responsive teaching and student-centered literacy practices.
Blasingame's contributions include foundational texts like Teaching Writing in Middle and Secondary Schools (2004) and Books That Don’t Bore ‘Em (2007). He actively collaborates with educational organizations to promote accessible YA literature and innovative teaching strategies.
