Laura Apol is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University’s College of Education. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and specializes in poetry education, children’s/YA literature, and arts-based research methodologies. Her work emphasizes using creative writing to address trauma and promote healing, particularly through international collaborations in Rwanda. She authored prize-winning poetry collections like Cauterized (2024) and Nothing but the Blood (2018), and her book Poetry, Poetic Inquiry, and Rwanda (2021) explores therapeutic writing’s role in post-genocide contexts. Apol served as Lansing-area Poet Laureate (2019–2021) and conducts workshops globally. Her awards include the Oklahoma Book Award and multiple Pushcart Prize nominations.
Research focuses on literacy education, arts-based pedagogy, and international educational partnerships. Her recent projects highlight Rwanda’s recovery through narrative and creative practices. Teaching responsibilities include creative writing and children’s literature courses. She actively collaborates with educators and institutions to integrate arts-based methods in trauma response and cultural understanding.
