Paisley Rekdal is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah, teaching in the Creative Writing Program and directing the American West Center. She has held roles as Utah's Poet Laureate (2017–2022) and served as poetry editor for High Country News and co-chair of PEN America's Utah Chapter. Her work bridges literary arts, cultural critique, and environmental themes.
Her research interests encompass poetry, creative nonfiction, and the legacy of the American West, reflected in works like West: A Translation and The Broken Country: On Trauma, a Crime, and the Continuing Legacy of Vietnam. She also leads community-driven projects such as Mapping Literary Utah and Mapping Salt Lake City.
Rekdal has received major accolades including the Guggenheim Fellowship, NEA Fellowship, and multiple Pushcart Prizes. Her poetry and essays appear in prestigious journals like The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine.
Her pedagogical contributions include Real Toads: Imaginary Gardens: On Reading and Writing Poetry Forensically (2024), and she has held visiting professorships at Stanford and the Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program.
