Jennifer Buehler, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Educational Studies at Saint Louis University’s School of Education. She holds a Ph.D. in English and Education from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in English from Eastern Michigan University, and a B.A. in American Studies from Yale University. Her research focuses on Young Adult (YA) Literature, the teaching of writing, and ethnographic research in education. She is particularly known for her work on book bans, diversity in literature, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
Buehler’s research on YA literature includes studies of censorship, author interviews (e.g., with John Green and Judy Blume), and analyses of texts like American Street. Her ethnographic work explores school culture and dropout youth reengagement, supported by grants from Saint Louis University and Yale University. She has authored books, numerous journal articles, and position statements advocating for diverse texts in education.
Her honors include the Spirit of the Billiken Award (2023) and Promising Researcher Award (NCTE, 2011). She has held leadership roles, including ALAN President (2014–2017) and chair of NCTE’s YA Literature position statement committee. Buehler teaches courses on YA literature, curriculum design, and urban education and advises doctoral students in education. She actively promotes literacy through workshops, speaking engagements, and initiatives like Build Your Stack.
