Mary Warner is an SSND Professor of English at San José State University (SJSU), specializing in English Education and Young Adult Literature. She is a part-time faculty member due to her participation in the Faculty Early Retirement Program. Her roles include Co-Director and Advisor for the English Credential Program, emphasizing teacher training and curriculum development.
Her research interests span Young Adult (YA) Literature, Literature and Spirituality, and the Bible as Literature. She has authored books like Teaching Writing Grades 7-12 and Adolescents in the Search for Meaning, and her work explores using YA literature to support English Language Learners. She received the 2017 CATE Classroom Excellence Award for her teaching.
Warner teaches courses such as ENGL 112B (Literature for Young Adults), ENGL 115 (The Bible as Literature), and ENED 365 (Seminar in English Education). She has advised numerous students, guiding them through unit studies and book talks on YA literature. Her collaborations include partnerships with public schools and teacher education programs.
Her grants and research include the 2009 ALAN Grant on literacy in ELLs and ongoing projects in curriculum design. She maintains a dedicated focus on fostering student engagement through literature and innovative teaching methods.
