James Albany Hoyle is a composer and educator currently serving as Professor of Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and teaching composition and musicianship at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. His work has been performed and commissioned by prestigious ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Society, Park Lane Group, and Fiskars Festival in Finland.
Hoyle earned his doctorate in composition from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where his research focused on time and temporality through musical composition. His educational background includes studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Purcell School of Music, King's College London, and Dartington International Summer School under mentors including Julian Anderson, Edmund Finnis, Matthew Kaner, Simon Speare, and Colin Matthews.
His primary research explores how musical structures manipulate temporal perception, investigating the relationship between compositional techniques and the psychological experience of time. This work bridges contemporary classical composition with philosophical inquiries into temporality.

- Participant in Royal Philharmonic Society Composers Programme
As an educator, Hoyle mentors composition students at the Guildhall while developing foundational musicianship skills in younger students at the RCM Junior Department. His teaching integrates practical composition techniques with theoretical understanding of musical time structures.
