Richard Uttley

Richard Uttley is a Professor of Piano, Contemporary Piano, and Collaborative Piano at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he also teaches in the Junior Department. He holds degrees from Clare College, Cambridge University (MA Cantab with Double First) and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. A renowned pianist, Uttley specializes in solo, chamber, and contemporary music performance, with a focus on commissioning new works and collaborating with composers like Mark Simpson and Kate Whitley. He has performed globally at venues such as the Elbphilharmonie and Royal Festival Hall, and his recordings have received critical acclaim.

Uttley’s pedagogical contributions include teaching solo and collaborative piano, coaching chamber music, and leading the Concerto Performance module at the RCM. He has examined at leading UK conservatoires and contributed to the Edition Peters’ Piano Masterworks series. His advocacy for new music includes roles as a Trustee of New Dots and world premieres of compositions by Julian Anderson and others.

Awarded the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust Prize with composer Kate Whitley, Uttley’s honors also include the YCAT International Auditions win. His work bridges performance, education, and composition, reflecting a commitment to advancing contemporary musical practice.
