Matthew King

Matthew King is a Professor in the Department of Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His work focuses on orchestration, operatic composition, and contemporary classical music adaptation. He is particularly noted for his reworkings of Richard Wagner’s compositions and collaborations with librettist Alasdair Middleton.

Key achievements include the Royal Philharmonic Society Prize-winning opera On London Fields (2004), the orchestral work Richard Wagner in Venice (2021), and the chamber opera The Snow Queen. His compositions often explore historical narratives through modernist techniques.
