James Akins is an Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the School of Music within the College of Arts and Sciences. He has served as principal tuba of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra since 1981 and is a member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet and Ohio Brass Quintet. His professional roles extend to instrument design consultancy for companies such as G+P Instrument Company and United Musical Instruments/Conn.
Education: B.M. (1978) and M.M. (1982) in Music from The Ohio State University. His expertise spans tuba/euphonium performance, orchestral collaboration, and instrument development. Akins is a renowned clinician, offering masterclasses on tuba and Native American flute across the U.S. Additionally, he is a respected flute maker and has collaborated with major musical instrument manufacturers to innovate tuba designs.
