Phillip Black is an Assistant Professor of Tuba at Wichita State University's School of Music, part of the College of Fine Arts. He serves as principal tubist with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Wichita Brass Quintet, and has held leadership roles in ensembles such as the Flint Symphony Orchestra, Galliard Brass Ensemble, New Mexico Symphony, and New Mexico Brass Quintet. He has also been a substitute tubist with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and an instructor at the Flint Institute and University of New Mexico.
Education: B.M. from Ball State University, M.M. from the University of New Mexico. His expertise spans tuba performance, orchestral brass ensembles, and music pedagogy.
Performance highlights include recordings with the Galliard Brass Quintet on the Music Heritage Society label, and recitals at regional/national Tuba conferences. He emphasizes classical music performance and ensemble collaboration in his career.
