Jaithri Ananthapavan is an Associate Professor at Deakin University's Faculty of Health, School of Health and Social Development, and a key member of the Institute for Health Transformation. With over 18 years of experience in health economics consulting and academia, she leads the Economics of Obesity team within Deakin Health Economics (DHE) and the Global Centre for Preventive Health and Nutrition (GLOBE). She serves as a Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on Sustainable Healthcare and was the Unit Chair of the Resource Allocation and Priority Setting unit within the Masters of Health Economics in 2022-2023.
Her research focuses on the economic evaluation of preventive health interventions and policies, economic modeling, incorporating environmental impacts into health economic evaluations, and priority setting methods to enhance the use of economic evidence in resource allocation decisions. Her work spans obesity prevention, alcohol policy, food retail environments, and sustainable healthcare systems. She has led the landmark ACE-Obesity Policy program, a comprehensive priority-setting study that assessed the cost-effectiveness of various obesity prevention interventions across multiple sectors and levels of government.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on integrating economic evaluation with environmental sustainability, health equity, and policy implementation. Her research portfolio includes modeling studies on obesity prevention, alcohol-related harms, and food retail environments, with particular attention to vulnerable populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and rural populations. Her work consistently bridges academic research with practical policy applications.

Professor Ananthapavan has secured substantial research funding including NHMRC Investigator Grants, with current projects examining obesity prevention, food marketing to children, and sustainable healthcare systems. She currently supervises doctoral students researching healthy food retail strategies, nutrition policy, and sustainable health services. Her collaborations span national and international organizations including the World Health Organization, Cancer Councils across Australia, and Federal and State Governments.
