Jacques Rupnik is a Research Professor at Sciences Po Paris (CERI) and a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. Born in 1950, he holds degrees from the University of Paris I-Sorbonne and Harvard University. His academic career includes roles as a BBC Eastern Europe analyst (1977–1982), advisor to Czech President Václav Havel (1990–1992), and executive director of the International Commission for the Balkans (1995–1996). He has served on boards for institutions like the Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation (2010–2017) and the European Partnership for Democracy (2008–2013).
His research focuses on Eastern European political transitions, EU enlargement, and post-communist democratization. Notable works include The Other Europe (1989), 1989 as a Political World Event (2013/2014), and analyses of Balkan conflicts and EU external policies. He has advised the European Commission (2007–2010) and contributed to international policy dialogues through organizations like the Carnegie Endowment and the Vaclav Havel Library.
Rupnik’s academic engagements include editorial roles for Transeuropéennes (1992–2003) and visiting professorships at Harvard and European universities. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary geopolitical challenges, emphasizing EU’s role in regional stability and democratic governance.
