Thierry Chopin serves as Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges within the Interdepartmental European Advanced Studies (IDEAs) program and holds a full Professorship in political science at the Catholic University of Lille. He also teaches at Mines ParisTech (Corps des Mines) and currently advises the Jacques Delors Institute, following prior roles as director of studies at the Robert Schuman Foundation, scientific advisor to France Stratégie (reporting to the Prime Minister), and consultant to the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs' Centre for Analysis, Forecasting and Strategy (CAPS).
His academic credentials include a doctorate from the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) and Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) from Sciences Po Paris, supplemented by visiting fellowships at the London School of Economics (LSE) and associate expertise at Sciences Po's CERI.
Chopin's research critically examines European Union governance, sovereignty, and political fractures, synthesizing policy analysis with academic rigor. His publications—including The Political Fracture of Europe (2015), European Politics: States, Powers and Citizens of the European Union (2010), and the 2022 French Presidency report A Europe for Today and Tomorrow—demonstrate sustained focus on EU institutional evolution, transnational identity, and strategic foresight. As co-director of the Schuman Report (2007–2018), he shaped discourse on European integration trends through data-driven assessments of Union cohesion.
His advisory work bridges academia and policymaking, notably chairing the Reflection and Proposals Committee for France's 2022 EU Council Presidency, which produced actionable frameworks for sovereignty, solidarity, and common identity. Collaborations with institutions like the Jacques Delors Institute and France Stratégie underscore his influence in translating theoretical insights into governance strategies.
