Ivan Katchanovski is a Part-Time Lecturer at the School of Political Studies and the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs within the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from George Mason University (2002) under the supervision of Seymour Martin Lipset. His academic career includes visiting roles at Harvard University, SUNY Potsdam, University of Toronto, and the Library of Congress.

Katchanovski specializes in comparative politics, political communication, and Ukrainian studies. His research examines post-Soviet regional divisions, state repression backfire, and armed conflicts with a focus on Ukraine and Moldova. He has published extensively on the Maidan massacre, far-right political violence, and Ukrainian-Soviet historical narratives.
His scientific work includes 19 refereed journal articles, 12 book chapters, and 4 authored/co-authored books. Notable works include The Maidan Massacre in Ukraine: The Mass Killing That Changed the World (2024) and Cleft Countries: Regional Political Divisions and Cultures in Post-Soviet Ukraine and Moldova (2006). His video appendices (e.g., Video Appendix H) feature synchronized forensic analysis, medical examinations, and ballistic experiments reconstructing the 2014 Maidan massacre.
He teaches POL3371 B Quantitative Analysis in Political Science, ETCH4330 C Human Rights, Armed Conflict and Transitional Justice, and CMN3102 D00 Quantitative Methods in Conflict Studies and Human Rights. His office hours are held on Fridays from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM in FSS6084, Social Science Building.
His publications and interviews have appeared in over 1,500 media outlets across 70+ countries, including Associated Press, BBC Ukrainian, Reuters, Washington Post, and Radio Liberty. He has presented at the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (2020) and the International Council for Central and East European Studies (2021).
