Isaiah Matthew Wooden serves as Associate Professor and Department Chair of Theater at Swarthmore College, where his work bridges contemporary drama, performance, and visual culture with critical examinations of Black expressive culture and race-temporality intersections.
His academic credentials include an AB in Government from Georgetown University and a PhD in Theater and Performance Studies from Stanford University.
Wooden's research investigates how contemporary Black artists across drama, film, performance art, and photography engage with temporal frameworks and racial identity. His forthcoming monograph Reclaiming Time: Race, Temporality, and Black Expressive Culture (Northwestern UP, 2025) represents a cornerstone of this scholarship, complemented by edited volumes on August Wilson and Tarell Alvin McCraney that document evolving Black theatrical traditions.

Wooden actively contributes to theater education through diverse courses in theater history, theory, and practice while maintaining a parallel career as director and dramaturg. His artistic collaborations span global venues from Uganda National Theatre to Kennedy Center, working with prominent creators including Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Lynn Nottage, and Tarell Alvin McCraney on projects exploring social justice and cultural identity.
