Dr. Jocelyn L. Buckner is an Associate Professor and Program Director for the BA Theatre Studies at Chapman University’s College of Performing Arts, with a concurrent faculty role in the University Honors Program. Her expertise spans Theatre Studies, Dramaturgy, and Theatre History, focusing on intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality in contemporary plays and U.S. popular entertainment. She has published extensively on Lynn Nottage, including editing A Critical Companion to Lynn Nottage (Routledge, 2016), and contributed to journals like African American Review and Theatre Journal.
Dr. Buckner’s scholarly work emphasizes deindustrialization, identity politics, and community performance, as seen in her 2023 chapter Sweat Equity: Lynn Nottage’s Dramaturgy of Deindustrialization and 2019 article on spatial politics in Clybourne Park. She has served as editor of Theatre History Studies (2022–2027) and guest editor for the Journal of American Drama and Theatre (2020).
Her awards include Chapman University’s Faculty Excellence in Mentorship, Valerie Scudder Award for Outstanding Teaching, and Sigma Alpha Pi’s Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Buckner mentors students in research and creative projects funded by the Center for Undergraduate Excellence and collaborates with theatres like the Chance Theater and Donmar Warehouse.
