Shane Vogel is a Professor of English and African American Studies at Yale University, currently serving as Chair of the Department of Theater and Performance Studies (TDPS). He previously held the Ruth N. Halls Professorship in English and directed the Cultural Studies Program at Indiana University. His work bridges theater history, Black existentialism, and the Harlem Renaissance, emphasizing intersections of race, sexuality, and performance.
Research focuses include African American literature/performance, Black existentialisms, and cultural phenomena like the Calypso Craze. His major publications include The Scene of Harlem Cabaret (2009) and Stolen Time (2018, Frick Award winner), as well as co-edited volumes such as Race and Performance after Repetition (2020, Errol Hill Award winner).
Grants and fellowships include support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, ACLS, and the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry. He co-edits the NYU Press series Minoritarian Aesthetics. His writing critiques historical and contemporary performance through lenses of race, gender, and cultural memory.
