Dr. Irene de Graaf is a Teaching Professor and Principal Educator at the Faculty of Medicine (FdG) of Amsterdam University Medical Centers (Amsterdam UMC). As a gynaecologist-perinatologist, her dual focus combines clinical practice with educational innovation. Since her appointment in June 2016, she has dedicated one day weekly to advancing medical education through the Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC). Her work emphasizes preparing future physicians for professional challenges, particularly addressing cultural norms in healthcare that demand resilience, self-awareness, and work-life balance.
Key initiatives include refining the Epicurus program (for Bachelor's and Master's students), which integrates personal development with clinical training. Her advocacy highlights the importance of teaching skills beyond technical proficiency, such as self-management and cultural adaptability within demanding medical environments. She collaborates with the PE Education Network to share expertise and drive systemic educational improvements.
Dr. de Graaf’s contributions focus on creating a robust foundation for students to navigate complex healthcare roles, using Confucian philosophies of 'strong roots' to foster resilience. Her efforts align with institutional goals for evidence-based teaching and lifelong learning in medicine.
