Dr. Ingrid de Zwarte is an Assistant Professor at the Economic and Environmental History Group (RHI) at Wageningen University & Research. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Amsterdam and NIOD Institute, focusing on the Dutch Hunger Winter (1944-45), for which she received the ASH Dissertation Award. Previously, she was a Lecturer in Global History at Erasmus University Rotterdam and a Niels Stensen Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford. Her research explores food and famine in modern conflicts, including their political use, social responses, and demographic impacts. Key projects include the NWO-funded 'Heritages of Hunger' (2019-24), examining European famine legacies in education and heritage sectors, and the NWO Veni project on famine dynamics during Indonesia's decolonization. She co-edited Tien miljard monden: hoe we de wereld gaan voeden in 2050 (2020) and received the Royal Netherlands Academy's Early Career Award (2023). She teaches courses on food security, societal transitions, and colonialism's historical impacts. Affiliated with NIOD, she actively engages in public debates on food policy and historical memory.
