Dr. Patricia Schor is a Researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Department of Art & Culture, History, and Antiquity, holding a Talent Scheme Veni grant from NWO for her project on racial figurations in Dutch modernity. She previously held postdoctoral fellowships at Radboud University Nijmegen and taught at Amsterdam University College, specializing in intersectional courses like 'Race, Class and Gender.' Her work bridges colonial legacies, racialization processes, and spatial politics, with a focus on Dutch identity formation through historical and contemporary lenses.
- Education:
- PhD in Portuguese Postcolonial Literature (Utrecht University)
- MA in Social Sciences (Erasmus University Rotterdam)
- Affiliations:
- Race-Religion Constellation Project (Radboud University)
- Race, Religion and Secularism Network (UvA/VU)
Her research critically examines the entanglement of race, space, and coloniality. Current projects trace how 16th-century Black Legend narratives shaped Dutch racial identity as 'white' against Iberia, influencing modern spatial configurations of racialized groups like Muslims and Jews. Methodologically, she integrates archival analysis with contemporary discourse studies.
Publications span racial representation in Dutch media, Lusophone postcolonial literatures, and carceral geographies. Notable works include analyses of Blackface controversies and asylum seeker detention practices. Her interdisciplinary approach combines sociology, cultural studies, and historical analysis.
- Grants/Awards:
- NWO Veni Grant (2020)
- Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies (2017)
- Prince Bernhard Scholarship (2009)
Teaching and mentorship focus on global history and critical postcolonial methodologies. She actively contributes to public debates on decolonizing knowledge systems and university roles in addressing historical injustices.
