Igor Melani is a Full-Time Associate Professor of Modern History at the University of Florence, affiliated with the Department of History, Archaeology, Geography, and Performing Arts (SAGAS). He serves as coordinator for research units including Behind Civic Humanism (BCH) and Global History (GlobHis), and holds administrative roles such as Delegate for Communication in the SAGAS Department and member of the University's Public Engagement Committee.
His research focuses on 15th-17th century European cultural history, emphasizing historical writing practices, travel representations, and cultural constructions of identity/alterity. Key publications analyze topics like Atlantic world concepts, Renaissance cosmography, and Mediterranean cross-cultural perceptions. His work bridges historiography, critical theory, and material culture studies.
Recent articles reveal thematic clusters in transnational Renaissance studies, historical temporality, and cultural identity formation through travel and conflict. He contributes extensively to academic editorial boards, including Cromohs journal.
