Ian Widdows is a PhD researcher at the School of Information, Journalism and Communication, University of Sheffield. He began his PhD journey in 2021 after completing an MSc in Physics at the University of Lincoln in 2020. His research focuses on inequalities and biases in school performance data, integrating advanced quantification techniques with critical data studies to propose alternative accountability frameworks.
Research interests include:
- Education policy and school accountability measures
- Data analysis and computational approaches to public data
- AI/Machine Learning/NLP applications in educational contexts
- Critical Data Studies and algorithmic injustice
- Social Research examining systemic inequalities
Supervised by Dr Jo Bates and Dr Denis Newman-Griffis, his work is funded by the ESRC through the WRDTP. Outside academia, he enjoys cycling, vegan cooking, and performing with a Border Morris side.
