Ian Wereley is a Contract Instructor in the Department of History at Carleton University, specializing in energy history with a focus on oil. He holds a PhD from Carleton University (2018) following B.A. and M.A. degrees in International History from the same institution. His research explores energy transitions, oil company advertising, and the cultural symbolism of fossil fuels. Wereley serves as an Adjunct Curator of the History of Energy at the Canada Science and Technology Museum and is Executive Director of the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies.
His education includes a Postdoctoral Associate position at the Calgary Institute for the Humanities (2018-2019). His publications analyze historical energy narratives, including studies on Royal Society of Canada publications and BP's early 20th-century advertising campaigns. Wereley has presented at international conferences such as the Canadian Historical Association and the Petrocultures series. He has received multiple awards, including the Canada Graduate Scholarship and Carleton's MacOdrum Library Open Access Award.
Teaching focuses on energy history courses like 'A History of Oil: Science, Technology, Culture & Conflict' and public lectures for Carleton's Learning in Retirement program. He has engaged with media outlets including The Globe and Mail and CBC Radio, discussing topics like oil prices and academic scholarships.
