James Opp is a Professor in the Department of History at Carleton University, specializing in 20th-century Canadian social and cultural history. His work intersects photography, archives, public memory, gender, and regional studies.

His research explores the material histories of photography, corporate advertising, cultural legacies of the 1980s, and the intersection of religion, gender, and the body in 19th-20th century Canada. Recent publications analyze digital archives, Cold War advertising, and public history methodologies.
James has supervised numerous graduate students, including Ph.D. candidates examining topics like LGBTQ+ masculinity, visual culture, and Indigenous representation in museums. His awards include the Carleton Building Bridges Award and the Royal Society of Canada’s Jason A. Hannah Medal.
