Ken McGoogan is an Instructor in Creative Nonfiction at Dalhousie University’s Writing & Publishing program. A globe-trotting Canadian writer, he blends historical research with creative storytelling, particularly focusing on Arctic exploration and Canadian history. Before turning full-time to writing, he worked as a journalist, notably as books editor at the Calgary Herald. He holds a B.A.A. in Journalism from Ryerson University and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia.
His research interests revolve around revitalizing historical narratives through creative nonfiction, emphasizing the role of Indigenous voices in Arctic exploration. He has published eleven works of nonfiction, including the acclaimed Searching for Franklin (2023) and Dead Reckoning (2017), which challenge traditional accounts of Canadian history.

McGoogan is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Explorers Club. He has received numerous awards, including the Pierre Berton Award for Canadian History and the Christopher Award. His work often explores forgotten histories, such as the contributions of Indigenous peoples to Arctic exploration and the legacy of explorers like John Rae and Samuel Hearne.
He has delivered lectures and presentations globally, including in New Orleans, Tasmania, and during Northwest Passage voyages with Adventure Canada. His writing appears in Canadian Geographic, Canada’s History, and the Globe and Mail.
