Harry Thurston is an academic and writer affiliated with Dalhousie University, serving as an MFA Mentor in Creative Nonfiction and Instructor in Writing & Publishing. He holds a BSc in Biology from Acadia University and honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from Acadia and St. Thomas University. His roles include teaching poetry and magazine writing at Saint Mary’s University and the University of King’s College, alongside residencies at Mount Allison University and Dalhousie.
His research interests intertwine environmental science with creative writing, focusing on natural history, ecology, and memoir. His works explore themes like biodiversity, conservation, and human-nature relationships, often blending expository prose, poetry, and personal narrative.
Thurston’s publications span poetry, nonfiction, and journalism, earning accolades such as the Lane Anderson Award and multiple Evelyn Richardson Awards. His environmental reporting and nature writing have appeared in National Geographic, Canadian Geographic, and others.
His conservation work contributed to Nova Scotia’s protected areas goals. He is also an avid fly fisher, reflected in his memoir Lost River.
