Dr Ian W. Archer is an Associate Professor in History at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Keble College. His research focuses on early modern London’s social, political, and cultural history, with a particular emphasis on urban transformation, uses of history, and governance. He co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Holinshed’s Chronicles and is currently working on a book exploring London’s evolution from 1550 to 1700. Dr Archer has held roles as Academic Editor of the Bibliography of British and Irish History and Literary Director of the Royal Historical Society.
His research interests include social welfare, crime, taxation, and London’s cultural identity. He teaches courses on early modern British history at Oxford and supervises postgraduate students in related fields. Recent projects involve interdisciplinary collaborations, such as digitizing Holinshed’s Chronicles and analyzing royal entries and lord mayor’s shows.
