Alex May serves as Research Editor (twentieth and twenty-first centuries) for the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB), a research project of the University of Oxford's History Faculty funded and published by Oxford University Press. Their role involves selecting, commissioning, and editing biographical entries on recently deceased figures across diverse professions, as well as overseeing thematic strands such as imperial/colonial lives, Black and Asian contributions, Jewish scholars, and geographers. May’s research focuses on 20th-century British foreign policy, Commonwealth transitions, and Britain’s role in European integration.
They are also Secretary of The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, Section Editor for Commonwealth/empire entries in the Royal Historical Society’s Bibliography of British and Irish History, and Obituaries Editor of Oxford Today. Current projects include editing a companion volume on the Commonwealth for Oxford University Press’s Oxford History of the British Empire series.
