Judith M. Brown serves as the Beit Professor of Commonwealth History at the University of Oxford and Professorial Fellow of Balliol College since 1990, following prior roles as Lecturer to Reader-elect at the University of Manchester (1971-1990) and Research Fellow at Girton College, Cambridge (1968-1971).
Her academic foundation was established through undergraduate and graduate studies at Girton College, Cambridge (1962-1968). Research expertise spans imperial and global history with concentrated focus on South Asia, evidenced by eight core fields including Gender and Empire, Commonwealth History, and Nineteenth-Twentieth Century India.
Professional recognition includes election to the Royal Historical Society and an honorary doctorate from the University of Natal. Significant service contributions encompass chairing the Charles Wallace India Trust (2001-2002, 2005-2006), membership on the British National Committee of the International Historical Congress (1987-1993), and advisory roles for the Indo-British Round Table (2000-2006) and Library of Congress Kluge Scholars’ Council (2001-2009).
