Ian Marder is an Associate Professor in Criminology at Maynooth University’s School of Law and Criminology. He also holds roles as Co-Deputy Director of the Centre for Criminology, Restorative Practices Officer, and Adjunct Professor at Vermont Law School’s Centre for Justice Reform. Previously, he served as Director of Outreach and Engagement (2019-24), MA in Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice Chair, and Deputy Director of Postgraduate Studies (2022-24). His research focuses on preventing harm from crime and criminal justice, restorative justice, and reforming penal systems. He collaborates with policymakers and practitioners to translate research into policy.
Education: PhD from the University of Leeds Centre for Criminal Justice Studies (2018), Research Associate at the University of Liverpool (2018), Visiting Scholar at University of the West of England (2022) and KU Leuven Institute of Criminology (2015-16). He acted as a Scientific Expert for the Council of Europe (2017-18) to draft restorative justice legal frameworks.
Research interests include criminal justice reform, restorative practices in education, and interdisciplinary open research. Current projects include the CORD Partnership (59 partner organizations) and the UBUNTU Project. He has received funding from the Irish Research Council, NORF, and others.
Awards include the 2023 British Society of Criminology’s Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning, 2022 Maynooth Teaching Award, and 2019/20 Team Teaching Fellowship. He supervises three PhD students on topics such as victimology, human trafficking, and technology’s impact on conflict-related sexual violence.
Teaching: Coordinates modules in Policing, Victimology, and Restorative Justice. Contributed to programs like LW454 Introduction to Criminology and the Communiversity. Guest lectured globally and delivered professional training in restorative justice.
Labs/Initiatives: Founded the Restorative Justice Pedagogy Network (2020), established the Centre for Criminology’s Restorative Practices Policy, and led the CORD Partnership. Collaborates with the European Forum for Restorative Justice and Irish Penal Reform Trust.
