Professor Ian Malkin is a prominent legal educator and academic at the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Law School. He currently serves as Director of the Juris Doctor (JD) Program and previously held roles such as Associate Dean (Undergraduate) and Director of the Office for Teaching and Learning in Law. His teaching focuses on Legal Method and Reasoning, Torts, and interdisciplinary subjects like 'Drugs That Shaped Society.' He has led successful Jessup International Law Moot Court teams, two of which won international competitions.

His research interests span legal education innovation, HIV/AIDS policy (particularly harm reduction strategies for supervised injecting facilities), prisoners' rights advocacy, alcohol regulation, and compensation law reform. He has authored/co-authored multiple editions of the influential textbook Focus - Torts and pedagogical articles.
Professor Malkin has received prestigious teaching awards including the Barbara Falk Award (2003), Carrick Citation (2007), and University of Melbourne’s Leadership in Teaching Award (2014). He has contributed to curriculum development for the JD and LLB programs, and chaired key committees such as Access Melbourne and Equal Opportunity. He also served as LGBTQIA+ liaison officer for the Faculty.
He has held numerous leadership roles in academic governance, including membership on the Academic Board Appeals Committees and JD Program Steering Committee. His work integrates legal scholarship with practical educational reforms.
