Johanna Commins is a Lecturer (Legal Academic Skills) at Melbourne Law School, joining in January 2024. She splits her role between teaching in the JD Program and the Ian Malkin Legal Academic Skills Centre, focusing on legal writing and academic skills development. Her interdisciplinary research bridges law, literature, and feminist theory, with a focus on women's representation in texts and reproductive justice.
Education: LLB, BA (English Literature), and MA (First Class Pass) from the University of Auckland/Waipapa Taumata Rau (Aotearoa-New Zealand). PhD in Law from The University of Melbourne, supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship. Professional background includes refugee law roles in New Zealand, legal research for the New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal, and English language teaching in South Korea (CELTA certified).
Research Interests:
- Law and literature studies, particularly feminist jurisprudence (e.g., analyzing Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale)
- Reproductive rights and justice in Australian and US contexts
- Gender discourse analysis in legal texts
Affiliations: Member of the Australian Feminist Law Journal editorial board, the Institute of International Law and the Humanities, Law Literature and the Humanities Association of Australasia, and the Legal Writing Institute. Active in the Reproductive Justice ECR Network at Melbourne.
Teaching and Practice: Combines legal pedagogy with practical experience in refugee law decision-making and international legal research. Former high school English instructor in South Korea.
