Ian Farrin is a Lecturer and Placement Tutor at De Montfort University (DMU), affiliated with the Faculty of Business and Law. He joined DMU in September 2019 and has over nine years of experience in higher education, teaching and tutoring in both Business & Law and Engineering faculties. His role focuses on career and professional development education, with an emphasis on enhancing student employability and graduate outcomes.
His research and expertise center on the social influences on student development, personality types, strategic career and employability pedagogy in higher education, and the dynamics of the graduate labour market. He is committed to embedding career development into curricula to improve student success.
His teaching areas include Career Decision Learning, Career Exploration and Decision Making, Self-awareness, Management of Professional Development, and Career Transition Learning and self-promotion. He is particularly interested in how structured pedagogical approaches can boost individual student outcomes.
Ian is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Career Development Institute and ASET (Work-based and Placement Learning Association), reflecting his commitment to professional standards in career education.
He holds an MA in Career Development & Guidance and a GCGI in Leadership & Management (Level 6), with a CAVA qualification in Assessing Vocational Achievement currently in progress. His work supports institutional goals around graduate employability and student success.
